We’re constantly changing facts, rewriting history to make things easier, to make them fit in with our preferred version of events. We do it automatically. We invent memories. Without thinking. If we tell ourselves something happened often enough we start to believe it, and then we can actually remember it. S.J. Watson
About This Quote

We live in a society where we are constantly encouraged to rewrite history and create memories. When we do so, we find ourselves creating a better version of events that fit our agenda. For instance, by trying to make the opposition look bad or by making the government look good, we can create a better version of reality. We can even do it for ourselves by creating a better memory of something that happened or something that could have happened.

This is similar to how we use the word “truth” as a synonym for “lie” without realizing it. There is an obvious difference between the two and understanding this difference will help us to see the world as it really is and not as we would like it to be.
